The Flash Mind Reader
Saturday, July 29, 2006
This is a little “mysterious” thing I've got by mail, and have kept in my files for years. It is supposed to “read your mind” ;)
It looked real to me, but soon after I discovered what is it about :)

Try to think of it before reading the comments because I will be posting the secret soon. Feel free to comment if you found an explanation, or if you’re just too desperate to know :P

How about: pick a number, double it, add 200, divide the result by 2, subtract the original number... And you'r left with 100!! THATS MAGIC, isnt it??! ;)
I wont be spoiling it now, in case it might make someone wonder!!

Okay people, here is how it works:
Assume the two digits of the number you choose are X and Y, X being the highest digit anf Y being the lowest. For example, if you choose (73), X will be 7 and Y will be 3.
The actual representation of the number out of the digits will be:
(X * 10 + Y)
It's like saying (7 * 10 + 3 = 73).
Now consider the computation you are asked to do “add the two digits, and subtract the result from the original number”. This transformation can be represented by:
A = (X * 10 + Y) - (X + Y) = 9 * X
Thus, no matter what your number choice is, your answer A will always be a multiple of 9, namely either 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72 or 81.
And if you look carefully, you'll notice that every time you try the puzzle, the symbol that corresponds to those nine numbers (9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 81) will always be the same!
Each time you try the puzzle the symbol chart will change, but the result will always be the symbol next to all numbers that are multiples of nine ... the symbol that the crystal ball will show :)

Nice Puzzle.
A very good animation of the same puzzle, made by the British Council, is available on the following link:

The ambiance and the associated music increase the magical effect.
